A Savannah Weekend

I spent Memorial weekend in Savannah, Georgia! It was a whirlwind few days, spent searching for a home for Shalae and Jon, who will be moving there later this summer for Jon to go to graduate school. In between looking at houses, however, we did manage to sneak in a few hours of sightseeing.

We flew into Savannah on Thursday evening and spent most of Friday and Saturday checking out houses. By Saturday afternoon, we’d found a home that we felt good about, so we decided to check out the city a bit.

We ate at Six Pence Pub, a popular restaurant with locals and tourists alike. The food was tasty comfort food, and the outdoor atmosphere was delightful.

We walked down River Street, watching boats go by, listening to the street music, and enjoying the charm.

We grabbed a treat at Leopold’s Ice Cream parlor, another popular spot. There’s a lot of history in Savannah, and we would have loved to do one of the walking tours, but we didn’t have time. We’ll go back, though, probably several times over the next two years, and we’ll definitely explore more of the city and its history!

On Sunday we went to the ward that Jon and Shalae and their family will be attending. The people lived up to the reputation of southern hospitality—they were a warm, friendly group.

After church, we took a drive to Hilton Head Island. We weren’t dressed for swimming, but the walk on the beach was very pleasant.

Afterward, we headed back to Savannah where we did a little more walking around a city square and fountain before enjoying a delicious dinner at Elizabeth’s, a delightful restaurant located in an old Victorian house.

After sitting on the house decision for the weekend, Jon and Shalae still felt great about the house we’d found on Saturday, so they signed the rental contract. We spent the rest of Monday (before we flew home) at the house, which is situated in one of Savannah’s suburbs.

Both Shalae and I are type A personalities, so we were busy arranging furniture in our minds and figuring out where kids would sleep and where pictures would hang. Every once in awhile one of us would call a timeout—it takes a lot of mental energy to be so detail-oriented!

Our husbands humored us and took lots of measurements and photos and probably rolled their eyes when we weren’t looking, but it was wonderful to come home with our mission accomplished. Shalae and Jon have peace of mind knowing where they will be living in a few short months, and I love being able to picture this little family going to school and church and grocery shopping and playing in their yard.

Oh, I love Savannah--one of my favorite places for a relaxing weekend! I think because I love history and the city is filled with it. The climate will definitely be different for Shalae and Jon--from dry to heavy humidity! But it is a fun area to explore for kids and adults---and don't forget to make the trip down to Jekyll Island at least once! And,even if you don't have Girl Scouts, the Juliette Gordon Low House is a must--I could give the tour myself--I should be a docent there!--Sara Nell Langland, Thomaston, GA

Oh Savannah is beautiful! I'm sure you saw a lot of wonderful sites. Next time you go, check out Paula Dean's restaurant - "Lady & Sons" ... it's a treat.

That looks like a really beautiful place to live and visit. I think they will be very happy there. Had a giggle about the mentally arranging furniture bit - that's so what I would do!

What wonderful pictures. It looks like yall had a wonderful time.I'm sure, even though you didn't mention it, you are sad about them moving. Hopefully it is a short 2 years.

I completely understand about being a type A personality! It can be very exhausting at time and time-outs are needed.

Thank you for sharing pictures from your trip!

Oh my! I read this blog often because I am a demonstrator and love keeping up with what you're doing! But I got behind on my reading because I was on vacation in... Hilton Head Island! I was even in Savannah on Friday and I happened to drive by that same restaurant and made my dad stop so I could take a photo because it was so beautiful! I would go back in a heartbeat and hope you had a grand time also.

How exciting! Savannah is wonderful. My nephew and his wife visited once and it became their favorite place to visit. They planned their wedding there 2 years ago, and we came from all over the country to attend and visit such a wonderful place for the first time. (We are all originally from the Chicago area) Have been seriously considering Savannah for a long weekend with my husband since he wasn't able to go to the wedding with us. Happy days ahead for you and all your family in that quaint southern town.

Wow! It looks like you all had a good time in between looking at houses. My husband and I were just in Savannah celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary (May 15th). We stayed at the Hyatt right on the river walk. As someone else said before, next time you visit Savannah visit The Lady & Sons and Uncle Bubba's Oyster House. Great food, wonderful city, lots to offer.

Shelli...how wonderful that your daughter and son-in-law include you in finding a home for their family. I love how close knit you guys are and makes me yearn for a family like that. Thank you for sharing this with us. Savannah looks beautiful and we know that you will be visiting quite often. I've never been there so seeing it through your eyes is wonderful. I wish Jon and Shalae lots of luck in their new endeavor and look forward to all the stories.

Oh, this brings back memories of when we were stationed in Beaufort, SC, twelve years ago. (Where does the time go!) I used to go to Savannah to go shopping. It's a great place! If you have the time on one of your trips to see Shalae and Jon, head up to Beaufort. It's a beautiful small town with great restaurants (I still crave the Chicken Salad from Plum's Restaurant--the BEST I've ever had!!) and quaint shops, and beautiful, historical homes. The main part of town is built on the river and has beautiful views. Many of the restaurants have outdoor seating so you can eat, relax and enjoy the views of the boats in the river. Also, Huntington Beach State Park has a great beach and the half-hour drive out there from Beaufort is really nice too!I hope their move goes well and that the transition is smooth!

Savanah- I have often drove through on family trips south. My daughter recently relocated there herself. She has found the people very kind and everything (shopping) within short distances. I should be heading down before the end of June to be "play tourist". Can't wait, I've already emailed her the ice crean parlor and pub for our trials!
Who knows maybe they'll meet! Best of luck on the adjusting to east coast humidity.......

I love Savannah, too! It is a favorite place to visit and I have been several times. On one of your trips there, you must eat at Lady and Sons (Paula Deen) restaurant over in the market area. Each time I have eaten there, Paula has been there and joined our table and we had a blast. Also, if you can be in Savannah during late October, they offer midnight ghost tours that are fun. We walked through neighborhoods and cemeteries and received a detailed "ghost" history. It was so much fun. There are two cemeteries there that are really beautiful and the statues and tombstones are very old and very ornate. I know you will enjoy all of your visits. Everyone is so warm and welcoming. And, I also agree that a regional in Savannah would be great. I would LOVE an excuse to go there again!

Shelli,When you are out and about like your weekend in Savannah, I wonder if people recognize you and stop to say hi. I don't live too far away from Hilton Head, and I know that if I saw you, I would squeel with delight and run over to talk to you. Just wondering if other people did that when you are traveling outside of SU events.

I can't believe you were here in my "new" home town.
I have been here almost 2 years and LOVE it!

I hope on one of your next visits we can grab a ice cream together!

You hit some great spots and there are so many more.
You will have to go to Tybee to walk the beach next time. It is close and such a quaint little beach town. You can rent a bike for so little and ride all every where!

I hope the kids love it here!

Another fan of the Georgia Coast. Make sure when you are out there sometime to get to St. Simon and Jekyll islands. Beautiful country for sure!
Hi Shelli,
Your little trip just might be the thing that inspires me to push Savannah to the top of my vacation list. We have children living in 4 other cities, so its difficult to take time for any other city, but I've heard so much about Savannah, and now I just have to go! Thanks for keeping in touch and sharing your life with us...it is inspiring! ...and when things get too crazy, Express, Release, Pivot. Thank you so much for that teleconference, too!!!!
