Sharing Our Culture

Last night we welcomed three Chinese guests into our home for a delightful dinner and evening. Our guests—Steve Chan, Fayer Lee, and Danielle Wei, whom we work closely with in China—were here for convention last week and have been at the home office this week, attending lots of meetings.

In the evenings, however, they’ve been invited to different people’s homes for dinner, our way of sharing our culture with them. Last night was our turn!

We loved it. All the grandchildren who live nearby wanted to meet them; in fact, Sidney and Seth dressed up and wanted to eat with the “grown-ups” in the dining room. They loved listening to their stories and their perceptions of Western culture.

It was Danielle’s first trip to the US, and she was especially surprised by how nice people were. She said that, based on the movies she’s seen, she didn’t expect Americans to be nearly as friendly as they had been! I’m glad we surprised her!

They saw a picture of Sterling on a horse, wearing a cowboy hat and chaps, and were immediately intrigued by the idea that he was a real cowboy! When he pulled out his cowboy hat and let them try it on, they were even more impressed. So then he had to go get the horse and let them pet it—it was fun to see them experience that! You could tell they were nervous, but they were excited too!

They didn’t act at all overwhelmed by the fact that 7 children under 7 were running in and out, around and about. They smiled and were gracious, but after they left, someone mentioned that they must have felt both amazed and amused at their evening at the Gardner home!

I enjoyed meeting Steve, Fayer and Danielle at Convention. I asked them a gazillion questions at the fabric display area, not only about the fabric, but about them personally and their role with Stampin' Up!. They were so gracious and friendly. I loved talking with them. (They speak English flawlessly.)

Too funny, My DD is had an opportunity to visit the World Expo in Shanghai a couple weeks ago... the Asian population was completely enthralled with the 5'11" American (my daughter) and posed for photos with her for over 2 hours! (She's a very patient young lady!)

Looks like they had a wonderful time. It is very funny that they thought of your husband as a cowboy. It reminds me of when my parents were in Italy (Boy, I wish I could remember the name of the town right now) and the Italians thought for sure all of the Americans must know George Clooney personally. They were in a little village that he owns property. Very funny!

I'm sure you can't answer this, but I'm not a demonstrator but have heard stampin up has come out with fabric!!! Can you share anything about that or do I just have to wait until, I think Sept.?Thanks :)

Actually, one more question that I bet you can answer- what type of food did you serve for dinner? I'm sure the typical food in Utah is different from what we would serve guest here in Texas, as every part of the US has their specialties.

Way to go Shelli and Stampin'Up! for many families hosting dinner for the Chinese. As a former exchange student to Austria for 1 year, each of the 3 families I lived with were unique, special, and as different as can be which gave me a more rounded view of the Austrian culture. This is wonderful for our Chinese visitors to also get a more rounded view of us here in the U.S.A. One question: Did our visitors get to stamp & paper-craft while here? (I sincerely hope the answere is 'Yes.')

Their first experience with Americans was the best they could have since they spent it with Stampin' Up! people and Shelli's family. I think this is typical of most American families I know, including a lot of kids running around. That to me just says American family!

Shelli I am not surprised that you opened your home to friends from China you are a very caring and giving person! What an experience for them to first come to America and be with the Gardner family that are so loving and close knit! I was at convention this year but not feeling well so I missed my chance to take a picture with you. The first time in 7 years!

Inky Hugs,
Terry~~

Christina- I made pork chops that sat in a Merlot/rosemary marinate for a few minutes prior to pan searing, till slightly caramelized, and then finishing them off in the oven. Then it was topped with a cherry/cranberry/honey/Merlot reduction to add a little sweetness. The plate was sided with cheesy french scalloped potatoes (and when I say cheesy I mean super cheesy, try 5 different kinds of cheese :) ...we don't go light on the cheese when we know we want to go all out), grilled asparagus, sweet fresh watermelon, and fresh Rainier and Bing cherries. Topped off with Graeter's ice cream shipped from Cincinnati, thanks to our friend Beth!
And there ya go, a dinner at the Gardner household.

It sounds like a wonderful gathering for all involved. It is also typical of your incredible hospitality -- you always share so much of yourself with others.
Shanna, your dinner sounds fabulous!! Maybe we need a Recipes section on Stampin' Connection?!
It's also great to see a picture of one of the equine members of the Gardner family!! I got to chat briefly with Gardner at Convention about his beloved horses -- hope he is enjoying Joe's book! Just a suggestion, but there should always be at least one stamp in the catalog with horses, cats and dogs. A love of animals helps to make us more caring and compassionate beings!
Hugs, Becky
